For decades, European travel has been celebrated for its speed, elegance, and dense network of railways, trams, metros, ferries, and buses threading together some of the world’s most historic cities. Yet for millions of travellers with physical mobility issues*, the continent’s famous mobility has long been tinged with inaccessibility: broken lifts at metro stations, trains with steep steps, narrow carriage aisles, uneven cobblestones, and buses whose ramps were either unreliable or non-existent.

The City of Dublin has teamed up with VivaCity and Bentley Systems to create a real time digital twin that fuses sensor, traffic and environmental data, enabling data driven decisions for safer, greener travel across the city and its boroughs. Intertraffic spoke with Jack Kavanagh, Dublin City Council’s Open Data Lead, about what this means in terms of how a smart city reacts to certain situations and how active travel is central to much of the thinking.

The build-up to Intertraffic Amsterdam 2026 starts here! From the 10th to the 13th of March the RAI’s Hall 2 will play host to the biggest-ever presence of the ITS Nationals (the network of national intelligent transport systems associations) with representatives from over 30 different global organisations, marking the organisation’s 20-year anniversary.

Intertraffic spoke with two key figures: Marc Verhage, Vice-Chairman of ITS Nationals and Executive Chairman of Connekt/ITS Netherlands, and Max Sugarman, CEO of ITS UK, to learn why the event is so important for the Nationals’ success and which metrics they use to measure an event’s benefits.
