After a number of successful contributions to Intertraffic’s flagship Amsterdam event, the Dutch Cycling Embassy received an incredible invitation last year: at the request of Intertraffic China’s knowledge partner, the Chinese Academy of Transportation Sciences (CATS), we were asked to participate in a half-day symposium entitled “Modern Micromobility Systems Improve Quality of Life”. Taking place in Shanghai in April 2025, it was intended as a first step in a more structured and long-term knowledge exchange between the Netherlands and China on the topic of active and sustainable mobility.

Urban Mobility Developments: Past and Future

The number of passenger kilometres travelled declined by 50-60% worldwide since the onset of this COVID-19 crisis including the use of micromobility solutions. However, due to shorter distance travels and fear of contamination in public transport, citizens of Europe and other continents chose bicycle over other modes of transport more often. In this article we discuss three micromobility developments.

Antwerp's Deputy Mayor for Mobility, Koen Kennis, emphasizes that micromobility operators must contribute to the city's modal shift. Key criteria include safe vehicles, adherence to city rules, and data-driven compliance. Innovation, such as restricted parking zones, is essential for public acceptance. Antwerp manages a limited number of schemes, involving e-scooters, shared bikes, cargo bikes, and shared cars. Kennis stresses the importance of dialogue between the city and operators, urging them to understand and align with city needs and regulations for successful collaboration.

A managed approach prioritizes safety, mutual benefits, and a clean, accessible city space. E-scooters weren't considered due to Dutch regulations and safety concerns.
