Road traffic technology, when operating successfully, is something of an ‘invisible conductor’. When it works, no-one really notices it… and yet the geopolitical flashpoint in the Middle East is increasingly dictating how smoothly those systems can function. The ongoing conflict is not just an energy crisis story, it is rapidly becoming a technology supply chain crisis story with profound impacts and implications for the road traffic sector.

How the middle east conflict could reshape traffic technology

The traffic and transport technology sector is under pressure to meet environmental targets. How, then, are those targets going to be met? One solution that is perhaps doing as much as any to “green” the industry is the use of renewable energy in the construction and maintenance of highways and motorways – edging away, slowly but surely, from a reliance on diesel-powered generators and transitioning to solar- and alternative-energy-powered lighting and electricity. In 2025 the global tolling industry has felt like an Internet of mobility: payment logic has migrated away from human-staffed booths where drivers hand over coins or touch payment cards onto a just-reachable reader and into devices, clouds, and - increasingly - the sky.

Two trends define the year: the wider deployment of GNSS/satellite-based tolling for distance and road-use charging, and the acceleration of “digital tolling” - cloud-native, app-driven, and OEM-integrated systems that reduce dependence on dedicated roadside hardware. Together they promise fairer, more flexible road charging, but also raise questions about privacy, accuracy and interoperability.

France’s decades-long investments in transport are now under strain. From the 1960s through the 1990s it built an extensive tolled highway network and expanded high-speed rail. Today those networks face growing challenges – as infrastructure ages, maintenance demands are mounting – even as climate change brings more frequent severe weather that strains roads, bridges and tunnels.
