Eyes and ears on the road: from real-time condition sensing to real-world maps
With the 5G-RoadMonitoring project, a partnership of four Belgian partners (Be-Mobile, XenomatiX, ASAsense and Citymesh) combine cutting-edge sensors with 5G connectivity to understand road conditions and detect traffic signs in real-time, turning that data into smarter, continuously updated maps and safety alerts.
The project aims to:
- Detect potential road damage through cost-effective screenings.
- Perform in-depth inspections using optical and vibro-acoustic sensors, streamed in real-time over 5G.
- Detect traffic signs from camera footage and use that information to update our digital maps and Be-Mobile's European road safety platform Be-Warned.
In doing so, we contribute to map learning and road safety data, ensuring that our maps and safety warnings stay accurate, up-to-date, and reflective of real-world changes.
Speakers
Filip Geuens is CEO of XenomatiX, a Belgian technology company that invented true solid state Lidar for applications such as autonomous navigation, pavement assessment, access control and ADAS
Bart Lannoo is Innovation Director at Be-Mobile, a Belgian smart mobility service provider active at European scale and developing high-tech solutions for traffic (traffic data, insights and management) and mobility rights (mobile parking payment, urban access rights and toll collection). Within Be-Mobile, he is responsible for Be-Mobile's innovation projects, both in a national and international context, and is active in several European R&D projects.
