Off-grid power supply for traffic technology with methanol fuel cells

Siqens GmbH, a leading supplier of methanol fuel cells, will be presenting its Ecoport fuel cells for the off-grid, reliable power supply of transport technology systems at Intertraffic Amsterdam 2026 from 10 to 13 March (stand 02.134, Bavaria International joint stand). As an efficient, low-maintenance and emission-free alternative to diesel generators, Ecoport systems offer ideal solutions for mobile and stationary transport applications.
Intertraffic Amsterdam is considered the world's leading trade fair for traffic technology, intelligent mobility and infrastructure. Siqens is using this international platform to present its fuel cell technology to an expert audience from the transport and mobility sector. The focus is on the Ecoport 800 and Ecoport 1500, as well as the EcoCabinet – a plug-and-play complete solution for immediate use.
Ecoport fuel cells use liquid methanol as hydrogen storage, which they use to generate electrical energy and reliably supply electricity – independently of the power grid. The Eco-port 800 provides up to 800 watts of peak power (500 watts in continuous operation), while the Ecoport 1500 delivers up to 1,500 watts of peak power (1,000 watts in continuous operation). Both systems operate virtually silently, emission-free and with low maintenance – decisive advantages for use in the mobility infrastructure.
"In order to organise mobility safely and reliably, the associated mobile and stationary traffic technology must be supplied with electricity – often at locations without a grid connection," emphasises Siqens Managing Director Dr Thomas Klaue. "Our Ecoport systems are designed precisely for this purpose: they continuously and efficiently supply energy for traffic monitoring, measuring devices and traffic control technology – whether temporarily or permanently. With the EcoCabinet, we also offer a complete solution that is ready for immediate use."
The EcoCabinet integrates all components for a self-sufficient power supply in a weatherproof housing: fuel cell, battery, inverter and methanol tank. The pre-assembled solution can be installed in just a few hours and is then immediately ready for operation. It can be individually configured – for example, with additional photovoltaic modules for hybrid energy supply. The systems can be monitored remotely, and updates and servicing are carried out over the air.
Typical applications in the transport sector:
Traffic monitoring: Reliable power supply for stationary and mobile speed cameras and speed measurement devices – even in remote locations without a mains connection.
Traffic control technology: Autonomous power supply for traffic control systems, traffic counters and data acquisition systems.
Information and warning systems: Continuous power supply for digital traffic signs, variable traffic signs and weather stations.
The advantages of Ecoport technology for traffic applications:
Off-grid: Completely self-sufficient power supply without connection to the public power grid – ideal for remote or temporary locations.

Quiet operation: With 90 per cent less noise than diesel generators, Eco-port systems are also suitable for use in residential areas and noise-sensitive areas.
Low maintenance: Minimal maintenance without regular oil changes or costly service intervals – this reduces operating costs and increases availability.
Zero emissions: No particulate matter or nitrogen oxide emissions, 99 per cent less CO₂ than diesel generators. When using methanol from renewable sources, operation is completely climate neutral.
Easy handling: Methanol as an energy source offers high energy density (4.4 kWh/litre), is available worldwide and is significantly easier to store and transport than petrol or diesel.
Siqens will be demonstrating the practical advantages of Ecoport technology at Intertraffic Amsterdam. The trade fair offers an ideal platform for discussing specific requirements and tailor-made solutions with transport infrastructure operators, cities, municipalities and planners.
