SERNIS Sustainability: More Than a Feature
At SERNIS, we’ve never treated sustainability as a trend. For us, it’s been a quiet but constant part of how we work — not a separate department, but a mindset that touches every product, every process, every decision. We know that the people who choose SERNIS don’t just expect innovation. They expect responsibility. So, this month, we’re putting into words what has long been part of our DNA: how we build sustainability into everything we do.
We know that the people who choose SERNIS don’t just expect innovation. They expect responsibility. So, this month, we’re putting into words what has long been part of our DNA: how we build sustainability into everything we do.
We don’t wait for regulations — we act with intention
Whether we’re producing our road studs, our flexible bollards or other road safety solutions, our approach is the same: design for durability, choose materials with care, and optimize for efficiency. These aren’t just nice-to-haves — they’re choices we’ve made deliberately, over many years, to reduce waste, extend product life, and lower environmental impact.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
Durable by Design
We build things to last. Not just to resist impact, weather or wear, but to be easily maintained and repaired instead of replaced.
- Our road studs use a modular system — when the electronics need replacement, the entire product doesn’t have to go to waste.
- Our O-Ring sealing system makes maintenance faster, cleaner and safer for road workers — reducing the need for disruptive interventions.
- In every product, we seek out ways to simplify the structure, reduce the number of components and ensure that each one has a purpose.
Materials That Matter
Every choice of material comes with a footprint. That’s why we:
- Prioritize recycled and recyclable plastics, especially in our flexible bollards.
- Use sustainable metals (like stainless steel and certified aluminum) from trusted European suppliers.
- Avoid toxic substances — all our electronics are RoHS compliant, meeting strict limits on hazardous materials.
Energy Efficiency, From Product to Production
- We design our LED-based products to use minimal energy, thanks to efficient power management. But our commitment goes far beyond the products:
- We use solar panels and LED lighting in our factory to significantly cut our electricity consumption.
- We’ve invested in low-consumption production equipment and apply preventive maintenance to keep systems running at peak efficiency.
- Every component is tested before final assembly, reducing rework, energy use and waste.
Minimizing Waste (Especially Electronic Waste)
Electronic waste is one of the most difficult kinds to handle — and one we’re determined to keep to a minimum.
- Our team uses a First-In-First-Out system to avoid obsolete stock and ensure full material use.
- We carry out quarterly loss analysis to track and improve.
- And even when we have small quantities, we send electronic waste to certified recyclers.
Smarter Logistics and Local Sourcing
- We prefer local and Iberian suppliers to cut the emissions of long-distance transport.
- Wherever possible, we use reusable packaging with our partners and optimize every delivery for space and weight.
- We favor rail and sea transport over air when shipping abroad.
- We keep packaging volumes to a minimum — always without compromising product protection.
A Lean Factory Is a Green Factory
We apply Lean Manufacturing principles throughout our operations. That means:
- We only produce what’s needed, when it’s needed — avoiding excess stock and unnecessary production.
- We’ve standardized and streamlined our processes, so each one runs as efficiently as possible.
- And our teams are trained to spot and solve inefficiencies, with continuous improvement at the core of how we work.
More Than a Policy — It’s a Practice
For us, sustainability isn’t a side project. It’s embedded in our engineering, our design decisions, our supply chain and our culture. It’s part of how we innovate, and why our partners trust our products to stand the test of time — technically, economically and environmentally.
We know we’re not perfect, but we believe that responsibility is built step by step, and we’re committed to improving every day.
If you're working with SERNIS — or considering it — know that sustainability isn't an afterthought here. It's part of every product we make, and every decision we take.
