Umovity: Integrating Technology to Address the Realities of Urban Mobility
Urban mobility systems are under increasing pressure. Cities worldwide must balance rising travel demand with climate targets, road safety objectives, and expectations for more inclusive and efficient transport. At the same time, digitalisation and data-driven technologies are opening new possibilities for managing mobility in more connected and responsive ways. Against this backdrop, Umovity—the joint mobility brand of Econolite and PTV Group— is developing an integrated approach designed to help cities navigate this complexity.
An Integrated Approach to Mobility
Established three years ago, Umovity brings together two long-established players in the mobility sector. Econolite contributes decades of experience in traffic management hardware, signal control, and field systems, particularly in North America. PTV Group adds a strong global footprint in traffic modelling, simulation, and predictive analytics software. Their integrated solutions connect day-to-day traffic operations with strategic, data-driven planning across the entire mobility lifecycle.
This convergence reflects a broader shift within the mobility industry. In modern cities, siloed systems are no longer sufficient to manage rising complexity. Planners, operators, and policymakers often work within disconnected environments, limiting their ability to create coordinated, multimodal strategies.
Umovity addresses this challenge through interoperability, working toward an intelligent Mobility Operating System that unifies planning and operations within a single, data-driven environment. The vision is a shared platform where data, models, and decisions coexist and continuously inform one another, empowering cities to predict, optimise, and steadily improve every aspect of mobility, infrastructure, and policy.
From Data to Insight
The integrated technologies of Econolite and PTV Group form the foundation of this intelligent system.
Econolite’s highly accurate, multi-tasking sensor solutions, such as the next-generation EPIQ RADAR™, capture detailed real-time traffic conditions. These data are complemented by live floating car data and long-term historical repositories, adding both immediacy and context. When combined with AI-driven analytics and advanced, model-based methodologies, cities gain a holistic, 360-degree view of their transportation networks.
A strong example is the integration of Econolite’s Centracs® Mobility with PTV Flows. By introducing network-wide predictive traffic intelligence directly into ATMS operations, traffic managers can anticipate congestion and respond strategically, rather than reacting after delays have already occurred.
Collaboration in Practice
Beyond technology integration, collaboration with cities is a central element of Umovity’s approach. One example is Hamburg, where the State Office for Roads, Bridges, and Waterways (LSBG) is developing a citywide Mobility Operating System. Designed as a modular platform, the system aims to unify data analysis, automation, simulation, and decision-support tools across all modes of transport. PTV Group’s long-term involvement supports the development of this initiative, which is intended to serve as a scalable model for other metropolitan regions.
As cities continue investing in digital mobility solutions, fragmentation remains a persistent challenge. Many systems generate valuable data but lack the interoperability required to unlock their full potential. Umovity’s approach reflects a growing industry recognition: sustainable and resilient urban mobility depends on connecting operational reality with strategic insight within a coherent, intelligent framework.
At Intertraffic 2026, Umovity will contribute to this discussion by sharing practical perspectives on how integrated, data-driven systems can support cities in creating safer, more efficient, and more human-centered mobility networks.
