Road safety

5 Minutes with… Arturo Cervantes, President of the National Alliance for Road Safety (ANASEVI) in Mexico.

Intertraffic: Can you introduce yourself?

Arturo Cervantes (AC): I am Arturo Cervantes, president of the National Alliance for Road Safety (ANASEVI) in Mexico. As an epidemiologist and public health expert with over 20 years of experience in road safety and sustainable mobility, I lead a multidisciplinary team dedicated to preventing traffic-related deaths and injuries. My work focuses on developing evidence-based interventions and policies to make our roads safer for everyone.

Intertraffic: How did you get into the mobility sector?

(AC): My journey began in public health, where I quickly recognized road safety as a critical public health issue. In 2007, I had the privilege of leading the National Center for Accident Prevention (CENAPRA) and helping establish the National Council for Accident Prevention (CONAPRA). These experiences taught me the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in creating sustainable mobility solutions.

Intertraffic: What has been the biggest challenge you've faced in the mobility sector?

(AC): The greatest challenge we face today is implementing the Safe System approach while adapting to Mexico’s rapidly evolving mobility patterns. Balancing technological advancements with safety considerations is crucial as we work toward the UN's goal of reducing traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by 50% by 2030. Achieving this requires coordinated efforts from all sectors and stakeholders, and I believe collaboration is the key to success.

Intertraffic: What does the future of the mobility sector look like to you?

(AC): I believe the future of mobility will be increasingly integrated, data-driven, and sustainable. Through our work with innovative ITS technologies, we are already seeing progress in reducing traffic incidents in Mexican cities. Moving forward, the challenge will be to ensure that global technological advancements enhance safety and accessibility for all road users while addressing the unique needs of our communities.
