Managing a large-scale network of remote routers can be a daunting task. Is the firmware of a particular router up-to-date? Which configuration does that particular router have? Not knowing that basic information means that the network could be vulnerable to cyber-attack. New cyber-security laws mandate that operators be aware of the CVE's (common vulnerabilities and exposures) which could affect their router fleet and keep configuration and firmware up-to-date.

The R-8500 series of hardened routers offers new features such as optical networking interfaces, a 5G wireless interface, a WiFi-6 interface and certification for the router to be used in moving vehicles. Digital I/O enables the connection of an electrical relay to the router, which can be used to power-cycle other systems at the remote location which have "frozen" or "hung up", thus saving an expensive on-site service visit. The router survives extremes of heat and cold.
