Mexico City, July 15, 2022. “In the coming years, cities must overcome challenges to create a livable and sustainable environment. Save infrastructure is one of them, improving highways, bridges and road crossings, road safety and public transport”, said Laura Barrera, Director of Intertraffic Mexico, during her participation in the National Forum of Metropolitan Areas, organized by the Association of Local Authorities of Mexico (AALMAC).
She added that the country's municipalities face the challenge to have safer and more sustainable mobility, which allows preventing traffic incidents and saving lives through adequate urban planning, the strengthening of mobility infrastructure and the adoption of intelligent transport systems (ITS).
She emphasized that in Mexico every 24 hours there are 14,000 traffic incidents in which an average of 43 people loses their lives, which makes immediate action necessary to improve mobility systems.
In front of mayors and aldermen convened in the talking, Laura Barrera affirmed that a sustainable mobility plan is necessary for the municipalities of Mexico. This includes adequate urban planning and the adoption of sustainability systems as established by UN Habitat, through the "15-minute city" model, which is a global trend and consists of satisfying all the basic needs of the inhabitants of a region (work, education, health, and recreation) in a mobility range of a quarter of an hour.
Safe mobility is a right for all citizens, and current conditions demand a more responsible action that forces us to rethink the way people and goods move, especially in large cities.
In 2010 Mexico had 384 cities and it is expected that by 2030 the figure will grow to 961, in which 8 out of 10 Mexicans will live. This implies an enormous challenge in terms of mobility, since the ONU has launched the challenge of achieving the sustainable mobility objectives of the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030.
The aim is to reduce emissions of polluting gases by 22 percent by 2030, as well as to guarantee access to sustainable and safe transport systems that reduce the number of transit events.
Laura Barrera considered that municipalities should strengthen road safety, reduce the number of traffic incidents, and strengthen the infrastructure that ensures safer mobility for users in public and private transport, as well as electromobility.
The Association of Local Authorities of Mexico will have an active participation in Intertraffic Mexico 2022, through a Mobility talking on the third day of the event.
The panel was moderated by Armando Quintero Martínez, Deputy National President of AALMAC and Mayor of Iztacalco, and was attended by Nicolás Rosales, President of Mexican of Mobility and Transport Association, and Jesús Padilla Zenteno, President of CISA.
