In Dubai, Crosswalk Safety Gets a Ground-Level Upgrade

In the heart of Dubai, where modern architecture meets relentless traffic, pedestrian safety faces unique challenges. Crosswalks must compete for attention in an environment of constant motion, cars, buses, delivery trucks, and the occasional impatient driver rushing to their next destination.

In such a setting, every fraction of a second matters. The clearer the signal, the quicker the driver’s reaction. That is why Dubai turned to SERNIS’ SR-50-RYG, a robust road stud that displays the same red, amber, and green sequence as the traffic lights, but right where drivers are already looking: the road ahead.

From concept to reality in Dubai’s streets
This is not theory. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has already installed the SR-50-RYG at multiple pedestrian crossings, embedding the signals directly into the tarmac. Phase Two of the project ended on June and added 10 more crossings, bringing the total to 27 sites now equipped with SR-50-RYG road studs across the emirate.

Mohammed Al Ali, Director of Intelligent Traffic Management Department, RTA, explains:
“The Smart Pedestrian Signals technology is operated by a system reliant on sensors connected to a ground optical system synchronized with the signal’s light operation. It perceives pedestrian movement before and during crossing, significantly enhancing pedestrian safety while boosting traffic efficiency and ensuring better management of signal timing.”

The unmistakable glow appears at wheel level, directly in the driver’s path. Solar Road Studs, also known as solar road markers, are solar-powered road safety warning lights that are often placed on the road surface.
Solar Road Studs are low-maintenance solar cell-powered LED illumination devices that delineate road borders and centerlines. They provide drivers with a longer reaction window since they are embedded in the road surface.
The primary function of these lights is to indicate the direction of the road, particularly in challenging rainy or foggy circumstances, as well as to encourage drivers to pay attention to the driving path ahead. SERNIS solar road studs are made of an active illumination LED light source and can operate independently for several years. They have a high level of durability, which removes the need for costly cabling installation.
LEDs are much brighter than standard reflective road studs and provide 1km visibility. Solar energy powers the road studs, which light up automatically at night. During daylight hours, the solar cells charge batteries or capacitors, and the LEDs are switched off.
Solar energy sources, as the name indicates, generate ecologically friendly power from sunlight.

Easy to install and maintain
Solar Road Studs require no need for wiring and can be installed anywhere, no matter how remote the location is or how far the location is from the grid. All that is required is to install these lights on the roads and let them be there for years to come since they would not require frequent maintenance.
These intelligent Solar Road Studs operate independently in the open air and they have their own power supply (solar cell), the electrical wiring is eliminated, resulting in a quick and convenient installation.
These features make the Solar Road Studs highly energy-efficient, environment-friendly, and easy to install and maintain.

Solar road studs are a novel approach primarily intended to improve traffic safety. These lighting products, however, may also be utilized in various applications, such as bike lanes and square and park landscape illumination.
Aside from energy savings, Solar Road Studs improve driver visibility and are a step toward the finest traffic management system.

Sleep Mode
After 24 hours without being activated, SERNIS Solar Road Studs go into Sleep Mode. This means that they can be stored for long periods of time without reaching critically low levels of power.  
The Solar Road Studs are loaded to the maximum level when leaving the factory and - activate the Sleep Mode after 24 hours without use - it can preserve the energy without damage.

i-Stud evolution technology 
i-stud evolution technology applied to some of SERNIS Solar Road Studs increases the performance of solar power studs with energy storage by battery or capacitor. The main advantage of i-stud evolution is the use of microcontroller technology inside each stud, which allows several beneficial features and control options.

Allows the stud to stay in "sleep" mode before the application, extending the autonomy of the battery

Automatic Brightness Control
Manages the energy stored, adapt the brightness, and regulates the light level in accordance with the energy-charged during the day

Definition of the Working Period
Set up the number of hours the i-stud should work after night detection (when roads studs do not have to operate all night long)

Operation Mode Flash/Steady
Switch the stud’s mode from ‘flashing’ to ‘steady’ and vice versa after installation

Flash Rate
Adaptation of the flash rate after the installation

Night Level Detection
Adjustment of the lighting level detection (Lux) 

Operation Mode Uni or Bi-directional 
Modify the light direction temporarily or permanently

Low Temperature
Detects the possibility of ice forming on roads and changes the LEDs color to warn drivers about the dangerous weather condition (option available)

If a problem with the stud is detected the unit is able to make an internal log to discover what are the causes of the problem

PC500 allows you to set all the operating parameters of road studs or road signs. The controllers menus are dynamic and will be presented depending on the user-selected configuration. The configuration can be made directly on the controller on their display menu or via configuration software that allows you to set all the operating parameters of the controller via a USB interface.
